Staff research interests
Research in UCLIC is user-focused. Within this, the interests of each member of staff can be briefly characterised as follows:
Prof Ann Blandford:
- Human capabilities (cognitive resilience, sensemaking, decision making, problem solving, communication and conceptualisation), and how to design to support these capabilities better;
- Working with information and the use of electronic resources (digital libraries etc.);
- Human error;
- Understanding individual and small team interactions with technology;
- Models, methods and theories for evaluating interactive systems.
Dr John Dowell:
- Multimodal interactions
- Computer–supported Collaborative Learning
- Learning through digital games
Dr Nadia Berthouze:
- Recognising affective states in human body expressions or biosignals
- Computational modeling of affect
- Exploiting affective states to tailor/personalise interactive systems.
Dr Duncan Brumby :
- Cognitive strategies such as interactive search and multi-tasking
- Cognition of driving
- Cognitive modelling
Dr Anna Cox:
Dr Cox's research interests lie in understanding the psychology that drives human interaction
with computers, more specifically in the role of attention in HCI. She is currently working on
projects on interactive search, human error, time design and immersion and welcomes enquiries
from students at all
levels who are interested in aligning their project to one of these areas.
Ms Rachel Benedyk :
- The use of laptops in education
- Physical and spatial aspects of interactive system design
We welcome PhD students,
taught postgraduate students,
and enquiries about consultancy
and research collaborations.
