Silk Road
event was organised by the Smithsonian Institute
as part of the 2002 folk life festival.
It shows
USA interest in central Asia this year.
Sight Seeing in Maryland, 7 July 2002
Paul drove us out of town North along the motorway.
We paused at the first memorial to George Washington,
near where the road (alt 40)
crosses the
Appalachian trail.
Before going on to
the site of the civil war battle at Antietam.
Now a
National park

Returning to Washington initially across country.
On reaching
Burkittsville
we turned north on Maryland highway 17.

Heavy use of overhead wires was common through
out suburban areas of the United States at
the end of the twentieth century.

In
Middletown
we returned on highway 40 to the east and towards Frederick
before returning to Washington along Interstate 270.
